Pixel phone will get a second-generation this year

Google confirms the Pixel phone will get a second-generation this year

Maybe by that time the original will actually be in stock

Rick Osterloh, the senior vice president of hardware at Google,An interview with AndroidPIT that the Pixel would be getting a follow-up this year.Google’s Pixel smartphone this year was a significant reset for the company’s mobile hardware strategy – and one that earned a lot of praise from customers and critics. Good news for those who liked it: Pixel’s successor will arrive sometime in 2017

Staying premium

Osterloh also said Google doesn't plan to turn the Pixel into a lower-tier device: "Pixel stays premium," he proclaimed. This may be disappointing to some who were hoping for a budget Pixel. Rumors suggested a cheaper version was in the works, but it appears Osterloh has put those to bed. Never say never, however, as Google could surprise with a budget Pixel edition down the line.

Although Google is keeping information to a premium, its typical development cycle suggests a Pixel 2 will go on sale in the fourth quarter. The current Pixel launched in October 2016 and Google has held launch events at around the same time for Nexus phones in the past.

Earlier this week, Osterloh indicated that while the Pixel brand remained reserved for its handsets, it may not make any more of high-end Pixel Chromebooks. Google's hardware chief quickly moved to reassure consumers that "Google's own Chromebooks aren't 'dead'' but the statement still leaves things in the air. Google may still continue to make its own Chromebooks, but they might be released under a new name.

Since display quality is a criteria smartphone buyers consider prior to purchase, Google is anticipated to provide a 2K display for the Pixel XL 2 and the Pixel 2.

The Pixel 2 is expected to sport a 5-inch screen and may get upgrades to the 2,560 x 1,440 QHD resolution boasted by the Pixel XL.

Google will possibly keep user feedback and demad in mind and integrate the 2K display in the Pixel 2 as well.

Google is also anticipated to enhance the battery of the next-gen Pixel smartphones so that it fuels better performance and there is less battery drainage. The two smartphones could also get a memory boost and get an upgrade from 4 GB of RAM to 6 GB of RAM.

The camera capabilities of the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 could also get improved and the devices may take the dual-camera setup route like the iPhone 7 Plus. The Pixel XL 2 and Pixel 2 will possibly also bring support for OIS, which will aid users in taking clearer pictures. Chances are pretty high that
